How We Get Things

Today its How We Get Things, Volume 8. Flipping through this book it has some great pictures, very dated but still a lot of fun to look at. I have to admit as a book to actually get information from it fails completely. Mostly all the writing is wussy little poems and very brief descriptions any kid nowadays would know. I don't know the age group this was originally aimed at but it must have been very young, but I remember when I was little I wanted to look at colorful drawings in books, not drab black and white photos.

First we have Animal Crackers from the "Meals and Treats" chapter. It doesn't talk about the mixing of the batter or the baking of the cookies, or even the fun little box the crackers used to come in. All we get is a photo of a guy weighing cookies. Wow doesn't he look happy at his job.

Next we have Boots and Spurs from the "Things We Wear" chapter. Cowboys are shown a lot in this book, even though the tradition cowboy is a dying breed. Are you even legally allowed to use spurs on animals anymore?

Finally Airplanes! from "Getting from Here to There". Ah, the days before 9/11 when you got your free bag of peanuts, a pillow and blanket at no charge, and there was leg room in coach. In fact I think in 1979 you could actually smoke on a plane! Man look at that take off, that's some leaded jet fuel they got going on there.
